Flexible Display And Transparent Display – By Samsung And LG

Samsung Display and LG Display, the two leading companies in the global display market are working to develop revolutionary technologies which will offer new experience for you. The two giants are currently developing flexible displays and transparent displays.

What Is A Flexible Display?

A flexible display is a paper-like display which is able to produce the same image quality when it is bent. The challenge here has been to make the display as accurate as possible and at the same time as light as possible. The various stages of evolution of flexible display can be defined as bended, rollable, curved and foldable. Products that are already using this type of display include Samsung curved edge display and LG G Flex 2, but these are not flexible.

Currently, the flexible technology is used in wearable devices as well as in mobile devices. However, it can be expanded to cover the entire Information Technology industry including monitors and laptops. According to an official from Samsung Display, the commercialization of foldable smartphone will be made possible in 2016.

Advantages Of Flexible Displays

Flexible displays have several advantages, including:

  • Slimness: Flexible displays are significantly slimmer because there is no need for bulky glass. They therefore allow for the thinnest displays.
  • Weight: Flexible displays are significantly lighter because there is no glass used.
  • Durability: Flexible displays are pretty much invincible to normal bumps and drops you inflict on your devices. This is because they have no glass to shatter.
  • Cheapness: Even though producing them may not be cheap, in the long run the flexible displays should be cheaper. The fact that they are thinner and lighter means quite a number of them can fit into one shipping container. This implies they will be cheaper to ship and in theory cheaper to buy.

What Is Transparent Display?

This is a technology in which an image can be displayed on glass. The technology is currently being used in billboards, fighter planes and commercial aircrafts. It is also used in luxury sedans in displaying the driving information which is place in front of the driver. Currently, the transparent displays can be found in luxury sedans such BMW, Hyundai Motor and Mercedes Benz.

According to a senior official from LG Display, the development of the display technology is already completed and the promotional prototype is available, but its commercialization will take some time due to demand and supply.
